The Sacred Kanwar Yatra: A Journey of Devotion and Endurance
The Kanwar Yatra is one of the most revered and spiritually significant pilgrimages in India, undertaken by millions of Lord Shiva devotees every year during the holy month of Shravan (July-August). Among the various routes, the Sultanganj to Deoghar path stands out for its historical and religious importance. This journey, spanning approximately 105 to 114 kilometers, is a powerful expression of devotion, discipline, and faith.
The Spiritual Significance
The Kanwar Yatra involves devotees, known as Kanwariyas, collecting holy water (Ganga Jal) from the north-flowing Ganges at Sultanganj’s Ajgaibinath Temple. They carry this sacred water in Kanwars—a bamboo pole with pots on either end—on foot to offer at the Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
The journey is marked by chanting “Bol Bam” and adhering to strict rules—no meat, no intoxicants, and a focus on spiritual purity. Completing this pilgrimage is considered as auspicious as performing an Ashwamedha Yagya.
The Long Journey
The pilgrimage from Sultanganj to Deoghar is not just a test of faith but also of endurance. The journey can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days, depending on the individual’s pace and rest stops.
Types of Kanwariyas
There are different types of Kanwariyas based on their journey style:
- Common Kanwariyas: They walk 20–25 km daily, resting at night, and usually complete the yatra in 4-5 days.
- Dak Bam: These are highly disciplined Kanwariyas who complete the journey in a single day (10–20 hours) without rest or contact with the ground.
Piplad Welfare Foundation’s Initiative
Understanding the physical and spiritual demands of this pilgrimage, the Piplad Welfare Foundation is committed to supporting the Kanwariyas by distributing refreshments, water, and sharbat along the route on 27/07/2025, Sunday. This initiative aims to help the devotees avoid dehydration and continue their journey with renewed energy and devotion.
